Overview of the Southeast Asia pet market
Due to cultural and religious differences, cats and dogs are favored in the Southeast Asian market. Overall, dog feed accounts for about 51.8% of overall pet food sales, and its leading position should remain relatively stable in the next few years, followed by cat feed.
Due to the large gap in economic levels in Southeast Asian countries, market differences can be glimpsed in the consumption Xi of owners in different countries. In better-developed countries such as Singapore, owners tend to see their pets as part of the family and are more likely to buy nutritious foods and their own brands. Some of the more affluent owners in Malaysia prefer to buy health care products. Pet products in the mid-price segment are still the mainstream in Thailand, while Indonesia's low pet ownership rate is a major restriction on the promotion of pet products, and Vietnam has a lower use of dry pet food.
So far, only about half of the world's top 10 pet products brands have successfully opened the Southeast Asian market, including Nestle, Hills, Zoetis, Mars and Merck. Together, these companies have a market share of more than 50% and often acquire other brands to maintain their position. Mars focuses on distribution, Nestlé offers in-store discounts to increase brand awareness, and Shears focuses on a niche of high-end products. In addition to the above-mentioned multinationals, local giants such as CP Group, HerbalMed Asia and Hoang Anh have market dominances in Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, respectively.
